March Charity - Ulysses Trust

As a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer with Shropshire Army Cadet force, a number of cadets within my detachment at Bishop’s Castle have benefited from grants that the Ulysses Trust has provided for the county’s Dragon Venturer Snow Cub exercises to Bavaria over the years.

Captain Nicholls who has led the exercises wrote of last year’s exercise on The Ulysses Trust website.

The aim of the exercise was to take Shropshire Army Cadets to Bavaria for a progressive Adventurous Training programme using the medium of alpine skiing. It was planned to undertake the UKCC Snow Sports Snow Life Awards course as the basis for the week’s training. This was supported with elements of snow/mountain survival lectures including weather and mountain hazards. All students were assessed in line with the nine levels available in the Snow Life Awards Scheme and those over the age of 16 undertook the Joint Services Ski Foundation Level 1.

Once again, the exercise proved to be a great success; those who attended had an absolutely fantastic time learning new skills. Planning for next year’s exercise Snow Cub 5 has already begun, building on the experience gained from previous years; all of which would not have been possible without the support of the Ulysses Trust.

As I write this, seven of my detachment’s cadets are on the slopes of Bavaria completing this year’s Dragon Venturer Snow Cub. In the coming weeks smiling faces with stories to tell will return to Bishop’s Castle. Underlining the moto of the Army Cadet Force “INSPIRE TO ACHIVE”

This is why I chose THE ULYSSES TRUST as my nominated charity of the month.
